    Severe Storm (Typhoon Sendong) Strikes
     the
    Southern Philippines

On December 16th, a devastating storm struck northern Mindanao and the southern part of Negros. Torrential rains in the mountains sent torrents of water down the rivers already overflowing from 24 hours of continual rain. Dumaguete City and the surrounding areas were hit exceptionally hard because of heavy flooding from the high mountains to the west of the city. Death tolls in the area will rise to over 200 and with thousands of homes destroyed there will be many homeless.

The damage to Iligan and Cagayan de Oro is tremendous. Over 600,000 people effected, more than 10,000 homes destroyed and 1400+ dead.

The Calvary Chapel Training Center is located in Dumaguete City and has sustained severe damage. Praise God all the staff and students are safe but many of their homes have been devastated. The farm at the Center has been destroyed and the tilapia ponds are also destroyed in the wake of the flood waters. The farm was not only the heart of our agriculture program but was the food source for all our students. Many of the buildings have been damaged to the point of not being usable.

Health and safety for everyone is a great concern. Our well has been destroyed so there is no drinking water and our kitchen is beyond repair at the moment.

Amlan, Sebulan and Candau-ay are areas familiar to many of you and the needs are great.  I know that many of you would travel to the Philippines tomorrow if your presence could help. Right now the greatest need is financial as the Filipinos are willing workers but very poor and unable to gather resources for supplies.

See pictures of the destruction. Go to my Facebook page www.facebook.com/SendTheMessage and follow what is happening(updates every 6 hours) or read our latest newsletter(click here). Our intent is to help as many people as we can in the entire region of Mindanao and Negros.

I know many want to go to help and many want to ship much needed clothes, bedding, etc. But, right now there is no way to get it there and sending relief teams will not be productive until we have an accurate assessment of the damage and need. What is needed right now more than anything is financial resources so the Filipinos can begin the work. All funds donated to the relief fund will be used to begin the recovery process. We need your help. All donations are tax deductible.
